When the nerve of a tooth is affected by infection or decay, root canal therapy is needed to save the tooth. The living tissue inside the tooth, nerves, bacteria, and any decay are removed, and replaced with medicated materials specially formulated for the root canal. Once the root canal is complete, the affected tooth will be restored to full functionality.

A root canal is the best way to save a tooth that would otherwise die and have to be removed. Although the procedure may seem daunting, it’s far preferable than removing the tooth altogether, which usually ends up being more costly.

The root canal procedure is highly successful and generally lasts a lifetime. In exceptional cases, a tooth will have to be retreated due to new infections.

How do I know if I need root canal therapy?

  • If you find an abscess on your gums.
  • Your tooth has severe sensitivity to hot and cold.
  • If you have severe toothache pain.
  • If you have swelling and/or tenderness.
  • Sometimes, there are no signs.

Why would I need root canal therapy?

  • If the tissue inside the tooth has decayed.
  • If an infection or abscess has developed inside the tooth or at the root tip.
  • If you have suffered an injury or trauma to the tooth.

How we do it: Root Canal Therapy

Our root canal procedures usually involve one or two appointments.

The procedure is done while the tooth is numb. First, a sheet of rubber is placed around the tooth to keep it dry and free of saliva. Then, an opening is created on top of the tooth and a series of root canal files are placed in the opening to remove remove living tissue, bacteria, and decay from inside the tooth.

After cleaning the tooth thoroughly, the opening is filled with a special endodontic material, and then sealed with a permanent filling. Occasionally, a temporary filling is used if an additional appointment is required to complete the removal of material from within the tooth.

Once the root canal is complete and the permanent filling is in place, we install a crown to protect the tooth and restore its natural functionality and shape. Your tooth may still be sensitive following the treatment, this is normal, and will go away once the tooth has healed and swelling has subsided.

You will be given special instructions to help care for your root canal. As with all of our procedures, your dentist will suggest proper cleaning techniques and encourage good oral hygiene, as well as recommend regular dental visits to monitor the health of your teeth.
