A denture is  a removable dental appliance that replaces missing teeth and the surrounding tissue. Although synthetic, they look like natural teeth and can even enhance your smile. Dentures are either complete or partial dentures. A complete denture is used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used in between natural teeth. Partial dentures do double duty: they replace missing teeth and they keep the remaining teeth in place.

There are also two types of complete dentures: conventional and immediate. Conventional dentures are made and installed about 4-6 weeks after the teeth have been removed, once the gum tissue has healed. People must go without teeth during this period, while awaiting their dentures. Immediate dentures are made in advance and placed immediately after removing the teeth, so the patient won’t have to spend any time without teeth. Once the tissue beneath the immediate denture is healed, adjustments are made to ensure a seamless fit.

Like all of our dental restorations, dentures are very durable, lasting many years. But, they may require repairs, adjustments, or eventual replacement due to regular wear.

Why would I need dentures?

  • If you have lost all the teeth in an arch, you will need a Complete Denture.
  • If you have lost several teeth in and arch, you will need a Partial Denture.
  • To enhance a smile and restore facial shape.
  • For improved chewing and speech.

How we do it: Dentures

Getting dentures requires several appointments, spread out over a period of weeks. First, we will take highly accurate impressions and measurements to create custom dentures to fit your mouth and face. Once the denture is made, there will be a series of try-in appointments to ensure proper fit, shape, and colour. On your last appointment, your dentist will fine-tune the fit of your dentures to ensure they are comfortable and feel natural.

After receiving your new dentures, you may experience some soreness, increased saliva flow, and have some difficulty chewing and speaking. Not to worry, this is just part of the adjustment period, these issues will subside once your muscles adapt to the dentures.

You will be given special instructions to help you care for your new dentures.  Your dentist will suggest proper cleaning techniques for your new dental appliance, encourage good oral hygiene, and recommend regular dental visits as the best way to look after your dentures.
